“Creating Modern Infrastructure
Across Africa”
Developing The Spaces And Community-Infrastructure To Enable Africa’s 200 Million Youth And Their Families To Build BEAUTIFUL, Modern And Sustainable Lives
Developing Private Community Infrastructure
Young Africa COMMUNITY is the first of the Strategic Focus Areas of the Young Africa VISION. The aim is to develop socio-economic infrastructure across Africa, especially at local community level, to create the spaces and other infrastructure that Africa’s 200 million unemployed youth need to be able to run businesses and live sustainable, BEAUTIFUL lives with their families.

Objective
The Objective Of Young Africa COMMUNITY Is To Focus On Developing Privately-Owned Infrastructure In Villages, Towns And Cities Across Africa To Create Opportunities And Systems For Africa’s Entrepreneurs To Build The Businesses And Properties That Can Drive Forward The Socio-Economic Development Of Their Own Communities.
Key Principles
There are two key principles that need to be taken into consideration when planning to build businesses on a local community level:
1. The Product Or Service Can Only Be Provided Locally
When choosing to start a business on a local community level, it is really important that this business must not be easily replaceable by an imported product or a global online service, since this would place the business at risk of not being viable on the long term.

2. The Product Or Service Must Be Sustainable
When we develop businesses across Africa, we have the opportunity to learn from the mistakes made by other countries such as countries in Europe, the United States of America and Asia, which have allowed themselves to fall victim of outright consumerism: i.e. placing the making and buying of things ABOVE the well-being of the environment and social sustainability.

Consumerism also places short-term profits above long-term sustainability. Because there are so many people in Africa who currently own very little, and there is such a HUGE new market of 200 million unemployed youth, who can learn the skills to become productive contributors to the economy, this collective buying power can strategically shape all manufacturing globally, to become more focused on doing the right thing: sustainable sourcing, manufacturing and distribution – along the value chain!
Just imagine if 100 million new young households in Africa over the next 10 years all buy goods that are environmentally sustainable: this will make it viable and preferable by all manufacturers globally, to produce their goods in an environmentally friendly manner!
Africa has the NUMBERS – let’s use them to shape the way the world works, while boosting the global economy over the next three decades.
How To Make This Happen
There are three key approaches to local socio-economic development that can help to create the environment in which local communities can thrive:
1. Systems Thinking
When we want to make a real impact, we need to stop thinking about trying to change one stand-alone thing: instead, we need to look at how the overall system works and start making a difference from the bottom-up AND from the top-down at the same time!
In the image below you can see the difference between just looking at moving from one position to the next. This has much less impact than taking time to look at all the different parts that make up a total system, and to then make the necessary changes at each point, to achieve a total systems change.

This emphasis on “Systems Thinking” was taught to the Founder of the Young Africa VISION, Reinhild Niebuhr, by a remarkable African leader, Dr Thokozile Chitepo. Dr Chitepo currently serves as the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth, Sports, Art and Recreation in Zimbabwe, Dr Thokozile Chitepo.

2. Development Along The Value Chain
Another critical way of improving socio-economic impact is by making a commitment to develop enterprises and infrastructure along the Value Chain. The image below offers a visual explanation of how a Value Chain works, in general:

By developing businesses along the total Value Chain, local economic development can create more jobs and income opportunities for people living in local, or neighbouring, areas.
Another incredible African leader, Dr Vuyo Mahlati, inspired the Young Africa VISION’s Founder to develop businesses along the Value Chain, by always emphasising the importance of this approach over many years of working together in the development sector. Dr Vuyo Mahlati passed away in 2020, but her legacy remains as a valuable contribution to socio-economic development in Southern Africa.

3. 5 Basic Local Business Opportunities
Inspired by both Dr Thokozile Chitepo’s emphasis on Systems Thinking, and Dr Vuyo Mahlati’s commitment to socio-economic development along the Value Chain, the Founder of the Young Africa VISION, Reinhild Niebuhr, has worked since 2013 to develop 5 Basic Local Business Opportunities which can create income opportunities for practically every single one of Africa’s 200 million unemployed youth – and their families – on a local, community level. These opportunities are:

Local Infrastructure Opportunities
Young Africa COMMUNITY is working to develop a number of local infrastructure opportunities for entrepreneurs across Africa, who want to support the Young Africa VISION and start developing businesses in partnership with Young Africa INVESTMENTS. The first of these opportunities is:
1. Young Africa WIRELESS DATA
We need affordable data to access the internet in communities all over Africa. This is citical so that all entrepreneurs across the continent can easily make use of the incredible business opportunities that are available through online technology.

This is why Young Africa COMMUNITY has partnered with an entity that has the ability and the will to establish wireless data hubs at schools, churches or in partnership with individual entrepreneurs all across Africa! Make money selling wireless data to the people in your neighbourhood. Each Wireless Data Hub must be able to reach at least 600 people within a 200m radius. This means that such Wireless Data Hubs are ideal for high density areas, schools, churches serving high density areas and apartment blocks or existing shopping malls. By becoming a wireless data reseller, you can start generating an income with very little or no own capital investment. Your job is to make sure your house is suitable as a place where people from your neighbourhood can buy Wireless Data, or to get permission to set up a Wireless Data point at your local school, your church congregation or a local shopping mall. You also need to make sure that the technology provided by our technology partner is safe, 24/7.
Contact us at community@youngafrica.net if you want to partner with us to set up a Young Africa WIRELESS DATA Hub in your community! Please put the words “Young Africa WIRELESS DATA Hub” in the subject line of your email.
