Growing Successful Businesses Across Africa While Creating Jobs For Africa’s Youth
A Strategic Investment Instrument
Young Africa INVESTMENTS is a private company registered in South Africa. This company has been established as an instrument to build strategic businesses across Africa, in order to enable economic growth, especially in underdeveloped areas, such as rural villages and peri-urban settlements.

Objective
Our Objective is to help Africa’s entrepreneurs to own businesses, with a special focus on franchise-based businesses, aimed at serving local communities, thereby creating sustainable, decent jobs and – through this – ERADICATING POVERTY on the Continent of Africa over the next three decades (by 2050).
Our Strategic Investment Focus Areas are:

Our Implementation Programmes
After more than two decades of work in the development sector, the Founder of the Young Africa VISION, South African author, businesswoman and social entrepreneur Reinhild Niebuhr, came to the conclusion that pro-actively establishing mainly franchise-based business systems will be one of the most efficient and cost-effective ways to achieve enterprise development across Africa on a MASS SCALE.
The basic approach is to start working with any enterprising individual (usually an existing partner entity which is running a Satellite Campus of, or a student of, the ACADEMY For A Young Africa, or someone who is already active in running a business or non-profit initiative in a particular area, in order to initiate the establishment of one of the following “ANCHOR ENTERPRISES”, namely:
- An Education Institution – Generally, this would be a physical campus serving as a Main Satellite Campus of the ACADEMY For A Young Africa.
- A Health Facility – This can be any kind of health services facility, such as a state-of-the art Elder Care Services Centre, Complementary Healthcare Clinic, a Spa, a specialised Oncology Care Clinic or a Drug Rehabilitation Clinic.
- An Agricultural Production Business – This can be any kind of product farming operation. Generally, this will be a biological vegetable, berry and fish production operation.
At each of the above businesses an average of 300 jobs will be created, with a minimum monthly cost to company of USD1000.- per job. In this way, each of the above businesses become a ‘catalyst’ for socio-economic development in their own community, since these jobs will attract people with a higher skills level to live in that village. Generally, these individuals will be married to a spouse which also has a higher skills level, and this spouse can then become a franchise-business owner of a business that serves the needs of that particular community. Each franchise employs on average about 5 people, while profit generated sustains the franchise owner, i.e. 6 individuals.
So in total, the above system combining three ANCHOR BUSINESSES with 900 FRANCHISE-BASED BUSINESSES can create a total of 6300 decent jobs. The Young Africa FRANCHISE model includes a list of 200 different franchise-based businesses, which are rolled out across Africa in partnership with existing franchisor entities, or successful businesses, which are keen to develop franchise models. Young Africa INVESTMENTS partners with franchisor entities mainly from South Africa, and Africa, but also from Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States in this regard.
What is a decent job?
From our research, a sustainable, ongoing job at this point in time should offer a cost-to-company remuneration package of US$1000.- per month, as a minimum. This is for a well-skilled individual.
However, positions within franchise-based enterprises are usually held by youth who are still in the process of developing their skills further, so these positions are designed to offer a cost-to-company remuneration package of US$500.- per month, as a minimum. The idea is that two young employees will either share accommodation, or that they may be a young couple with one child, which will share accommodation. As they progress in their skills level, they may find employment in a secondary business, that has started operating in the area to provide services to one of the three ANCHOR businesses, that will hopefully then also offer a minimum cost-to-company remuneration package of US$1000.-
The above model is based on an area in which there is an average population of 10 000 youth and adults, and up to 20 000 children under the age of 15. The 900 franchise-based businesses are located in one of the following three property developments, initiated by Young Africa PROPERTY – another entity in which Young Africa INVESTMENTS holds shares:

Here is a basic overview of each of the above Implementation Programmes:
Young Africa SCHOOL – The ACADEMY For A Young Africa partners with any public or private school in Africa with the aim to establish a “Young Africa SQUARE” mini-mall development on the edge of the school grounds – land permitting. This starts as a small Enterprise-Development Hub, offering products and services that meet the immediate needs of learners at the school, and their parents, as well as the people living in the vicinity of the school. Below is an illustration of the starting point of a Young Africa SQUARE development (Phase 1):

Over time, this initial facility, which only requires 108sqm of land area, can grow to include more mini-franchises, where students of the ACADEMY For A Young Africa can work, and offer products and services to their communities. Below is an illustration of how the Young Africa SQUARE model can look like after one year or two, if a land area of about 1000sqm is available:

In addition, the ACADEMY For A Young Africa itself can partner with local organisations or entrepreneurs to establish residential campus sites as Satellite Campuses. These campus sites can each also include a mini-mall as shown above, in order to offer an opportunity for the students of that campus to gain practical experience in the mini-franchises, before moving back to their own villages and towns and to start own franchise businesses in a Young Africa SQUARE setting.
The design of these residential campus sites depends on the land area and any existing facilities, so no illustration is provided here. However, just to get your imagination going, Young Africa INVESTMENTS will generally partner with pre-fabricated building development companies, to establish such campus facilities over the shortest time period as possible. One of these companies is HOUSEZERO, a Pretoria, South Africa, based company that offers modular buildings, which are self-powered, grid-independent and strive towards environmental sustainable building practices. Here is an image of one of their building models, which may be used for student accommodation on an ACADEMY For A Young Africa Residential Satellite Campus:

Young Africa CITY – Young Africa CITY is a concept development involving a fully-fledged mixed-use property development, similar to the “Melrose Arch” development in Johannesburg, South Africa, where families can LIVE, WORK, LEARN, SHOP and PLAY. Again, for new property developments, where feasible, modular, pre-fabricated building technologies will be used. In other cases, existing office buildings or apartment blocks in inner cities may be transformed into mixed-use developments. Alternatively, complete new buildings may be built, housing thousands of people. Some of the interesting ideas offered in this regard have been developed by The Safari City, such as the image below shows:

Young Africa INVESTMENTS is committed to working with the brightest brains in Africa and in the rest of the world, to offer integrated living and work solutions to Africa’s 200 million unemployed youth, who will be learning through the ACADEMY For A Young Africa how to build beautiful, sustainable and prosperous lives.
Enterprise Development
In addition to the above ‘CORE PROGRAMMES’ to drive the development of enterprises across Africa, Young Africa INVESTMENTS will be working with investors internationally to raise investment funding into specific innovative business opportunities across Africa. The Founder of the Young Africa VISION, South African author, businesswoman and social entrepreneur, Reinhild Niebuhr, started building networks with a large range of prospective investors in Europe and in the United States of America in 2018. This work was interrupted by the sudden and unexpected death of her husband, Nico den Oudsten, in mid-2019, and by COVID-19 in 2020, but is now continuing at full speed again in 2021.

Our Commitment To Accountability
Young Africa INVESTMENTS uses state-of-the-art financial management software to keep track of every single cent received as an investment, or as income, and can pinpoint in real-time how any funds received have been deployed. “During the past century billions of dollars were invested in Africa with very little impact proven. By changing from a ‘donor-based’ model to an enterprise-development model, social impact investments from grantmakers internationally can have a direct positive impact on sustainable job-creation on the continent. In addition, institutional investors can drive the development of economic infrastructure across Africa in collaboration with Young Africa INVESTMENTS. We know the continent and we have networks across the continent that can be leveraged to create profitable investment opportunities, while contributing to socio-economic development across Africa.”
Reinhild Niebuhr – Founder, Young Africa VISION
